Chatbi fails steroids testJamal Chatbi, the Moroccan steeplechaser who qualified for the world championships in Berlin recently tested positive for Clenbuterol. According to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the international governing body for the sport of athletics, Chatbi will be suspended for the world championship final to be held on Tuesday.

He was tested positive on a doping test last Saturday, after which he waived the B sample. Under Australian Sports Anti-doping Agency rules, in any urine sample collection funded by the government, an athlete may waive B sample analysis. Furthermore, athletes may also waive their right to give the anti-doping agency a written submission.

Clenbuterol is approved in some countries, provided it is obtained with a doctor’s prescription. It is mainly used for the treatment of asthma and other respiratory disorders. The drug has been used widely as a slimming aid and lean muscle enhancer. In 2006, Clenbuterol was prohibited by the US Food and Drug Association and is also banned in IOC-tested athletes . However, many people still continue to use it especially by bodybuilders and weightlifters.

Chatbi faces a two-year suspension as well as disqualification from the world championships. His case was the first recorded steroid case at the Berlin championships.
