A chance discovery in the Berlin archives of the notorious East German secret police, Stasi, led to the discovery of the spy’s service operations at the 1976 Montreal Games.
A University of Waterloo professor, Gary Bruce discovered some pages left of a Stasi officer’s report regarding the drug program East German officials conducted to their athletes.
The report discussed about 10 suitcases of medical packaging, needles and tubular instruments that were reportedly dumped at the St. Lawrence River after East German athletes were injected by performance-enhancing drugs.
East Germany made headlines after winning 40 gold medals during the 1976 Olympics, second to the Soviet Union.
However, according to Prof. Gary Bruce, eight of the nine pages of the report were missing, as if it was purposely destroyed to hide evidence of the drug program.
The documents clearly showed Stasi Chief, Erik Mielke’s goal to improve East Germany’s world standing by ensuring that it receives recognition during the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
However, many of their athletes were unaware that the drugs they were receiving were actually anabolic steroids. Many of them suffered serious health problems. Many female athletes gave birth to babies with defects.
From CTV News:
OTTAWA — After injecting athletes with performance-boosting drugs at the Montreal Olympics, East German officials dumped the leftover serum and syringes in the St. Lawrence River, newly uncovered documents indicate.
