Young Children using Performance enhancing drugs in sports
Posted Byi steroids
According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, more than one percent of eleven year olds have admitted to using performance enhancing drugs to excel in sporting events.
It was also found that the population of performance enhancing drug users rose from 1.2 to 3.0 percent by the age of 15. While 62 percent of 11-year olds admitted using these drugs less than once per month, children at 15 years were found to use them at least every week and 24 percent of them admitted using them on a daily basis.
From News-Medical.Net:
Boys were more likely to take the drugs than girls. Training for more hours, low-self esteem and signs of anxiety were also linked to increased use.
The authors say: ‘Young athletes who are tempted to use doing agents are more likely to be boys, invest much more time in training, are ready users of psychoactive substances, and, importantly, they appear to be in some distress. Furthermore at least six months previously, they have said that they had been tempted to try a prohibited drug. Adults responsible for young people should be alerted by these signs.’
According to the study, 44 percent children said that the use of drugs give them a greater chances of winning at professional events.
Despite the fact that steroids do not pose any harm to the body unless abused, these facts are still concerning as one needs to be completely educated about the pros and cons of steroids and must use them only after seeking a qualified medical advice. In this respect, there is an urgent need to educate budding sportsmen and potential steroid users so that they do not play with their healthy by abusing steroids, knowingly or unknowingly.
